Argentina captain Lionel Messi lifted the “fake” World Cup during a photo posted on his Instagram account after winning the tournament at the expense of France via penalty kicks at the “Lucille” Stadium in the Qatari capital Doha. It became the most-liked photo in Instagram history, surpassing the famous “egg” photo. As of Thursday evening, the photo had garnered 74 million likes.
Two fans of the Argentina national team explained to the newspaper “Clarin” that the trophy that Messi lifted on the field was actually fake.As per FIFA protocol, the actual trophy was handed to the winner for the podium photo by president Gianni Infantino and withdrawn moments later.”Before the World Cup we were looking for someone who could replicate the World Cup,”
Paula Zuzolich, an Argentina fan in Qatar, told Clarin. It took us 6 months to make the replica world cup trophy. We were worried about how to convince the players to sign this cup. However, in the end, the same trophy was lifted several times on the field.Continuing, Zuzolich said that first a member of the Paredes family took it to sign. A second time a player took pictures with him and then other players took photos. Finally FIFA security arrived and asked us to confirm that it was not genuine.
The FIFA team has concluded that this fake World Cup trophy has some details, markings and inscriptions that are not similar to the original cup. However, this difference is very small.
Paula recalled the moment Di Maria laughingly pointed to the fake trophy and revealed its authenticity. Argentina captain Lionel Messi lifted the “fake” World Cup during a photo posted on his Instagram account after winning the tournament at the expense of France via penalty kicks at the
