Manchester United fans have been heaping praise on their former striker Cristiano Ronaldo, as he prepares to make history by becoming the most-capped men’s international player of all time.
On Thursday night, Ronaldo will make his 197th appearance for Portugal in the Euro 2024 qualifier against Liechtenstein, surpassing Kuwaiti forward Badr Al-Mutawa’s previous record. The 38-year-old forward levelled with Al-Mutawa on 196 appearances after featuring for his country against Morocco at the World Cup in Qatar.
Ronaldo had already made history last year when he surpassed Iranian Ali Daei’s record to become the all-time leading goalscorer in men’s international football, scoring twice against the Republic of Ireland to take his tally to 109. Since then, he has scored a further nine goals for his country, bringing his total to an incredible 118.
United fans were quick to show their admiration for Ronaldo on social media, congratulating the Portuguese legend on his latest achievement. It’s no surprise that Ronaldo still holds a special place in the hearts of many United supporters, having won three Premier League titles and the Champions League during his time at Old Trafford.
While Al-Mutawa’s record was impressive in its own right, Ronaldo’s achievement is a testament to his longevity, consistency and unrelenting pursuit of greatness. As he continues to break records and defy expectations, it’s clear that Ronaldo will go down in history as one of the greatest footballers of all time.
